Fitness trackers come in many shapes and sizes and with loads of different features at different price points. They’re a helpful tool in assisting you with staying on top of your health and fitness goals and when paired with a smartphone they can really provide some great benefits like checking your heat rate stats over a longer period of time and joining up with a community of like-minded people who are all about motivation when it comes to getting fit.
With so many different fitness trackers out there though, coming from tons of brands, it’s easy to understand how picking one can become more of a daunting task than it seems like it’s worth. Which ones are good? Which ones should you avoid? And which ones are the best value for money? We’ve put together a list of the best fitness trackers to help you answer some of these questions, so if you’re looking to upgrade your current fitness tracker or pick one up for the first time, the options below are a good place to start your search.
Starting things off is a recently launched device from Polar, the Ignite. While this is technically a watch, it’s a fitness watch and not a smartwatch, and focuses heavily on providing you with tons of fitness features that can help make your exercise sessions the best they can be. It aims to do that with its Nightly Recharge feature, which looks at different factors from the collected fitness data during use and sets out to transform that information into better fitness performance on your next exercise session, whatever that may be.
In addition to this it also holds a heart rate sensor on the back so you can keep tabs on your heat rate while you work out, as well as GPS to keep track of your steps and distance for things like walking and running. It can help you track your sleep data which is a big part of helping you improve your overall fitness performance as a good night’s rest is paramount to getting a better workout. It’s a bit pricier at $230 but the extra features may be just what you’re looking for.
Fitbit Charge 3
Fitbit is usually a company that needs no introduction when it comes to fitness trackers as it specializes in one thing mainly; fitness trackers. One of the latest from Fitbit is the Charge 3, which, short of its smartwatches is the top of the line tracker with just about all the bells and whistles.
It’s the latest in the Charge line and comes with a heart rate sensor for tracking continuous heart rate all while claiming to have a battery that will last you up to an entire week. If you sweat a lot or you tend to exercise while it’s raining out, or if you just live in an area where you can’t really avoid the rain, the Charge 3 is water resistant and swim proof so any water that hits it should be fine so long as you’re not submerging it for too long.
You can also use the Charge 3 to track and view your steps, your floors climbed, and get notifications for calls and texts and other messaging apps, and it’s pretty hard to beat the companion software and app that Fitbit pairs with its trackers.
Fitbit Inspire HR
If you’re looking to spend just a little bit less on a tracker but you do love Fitbit products, or if you simply trust the brand, the new Inspire HR is probably the one to go for. It retails for close to $100 instead of the $140 Charge 3, so you’ll save a little bit of money on the device while still getting many of the same features.
It has a heart rate sensor for continuous heart rate tracking and it comes with a long battery life as well so you don’t have to worry about charging it as much as you might with something like the Polar Ignite or other watches, thanks to the minimal display.
You can also track steps, distance, and daily activities among other things here just like with the Charge 3, so you’re not missing out on a whole lot by going with this less expensive option.
Garmin Vivosmart 4
Garmin is well-know mostly for its GPS technology and devices like its GPS navigation systems, but it also makes fitness trackers and fitness watches and the Vivosmart 4 is one of its latest.
As you can probably guess it comes with the ability to track things like your steps and distance, and it does track your heart rate, but did you know that it comes with an Ox2 sensor? With this particular sensor on the back the Vivosmart 4 will track your blood oxygen saturation levels. It even has different activity modes for everything from running to yoga, so no matter how you to choose to exercise it should be able to help you keep track of the data.
The Garmin Vivosmart 4 is about the same size as the Charge 3 and will run you about $140.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active
Fitness trackers are great, but sometimes you want more than just fitness features. That’s where the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active comes in. It has a larger display for reading all of your stats and notifications, and of course the display is touch interactive so you flip through things as needed.
Coming with a much more sporty design the Galaxy Watch Active skips the rotating bezel that’s seen on Samsung’s non-active watch models, but keeps things like the heart rate sensor, the silicone watch strap, and the swim and water resistant design. It even has the capability to send you alerts whenever it detects that you’ve got a high or low heart rate, and it can still use some of the apps the other watches can.
Huawei Band 3 Pro
Looking for something on a little bit of a smaller budget than what’s been on this list so far? The Huawei Band 3 Pro offers many of the same features but at a lower cost. It retails for $70, comes with a fairly decent-sized display, and comes in a few different colors so you can pick the one that suits your style the best.
The Band 3 Pro offers features like step and distance tracking, as well as tracking for various other fitness activities, the display is AMOLED so it’s nice and bright and it supports color so things should be easier to read in direct sunlight. It also has built-in GPS so a connection to your phone isn’t needed for any of the tracking features.
It can track your heart rate as well and it’s water resistant, so for the most part you get just about everything you could need or want in a fitness tracker.
Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro
The Gear Fit2 Pro might be a little dated at this point but it’s still a great fitness tracker coming with plenty of features. The best part? It used to retail for $200 and is now available for about $138, which is a pretty big savings and a good deal on a higher quality tracker.
The Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro comes with a big AMOLED display for viewing and interactivity, and it features a heart rate sensor, Wi-Fi connectivity, and even local storage so you can play music through connected headphones. It’s dust and water resistant too, so wear it during the rain or dust storms, sweat all over it, or even drop it in the dirt and it’ll be just fine.
Withings Steel HR Sport
Rounding things out is the Steel HR Sport from Withings, which comes with a big 40mm face and more of a sport watch design so it looks as little like a piece of tech as possible. It’s complete with GPS, heart rate tracking, sleep tracking, a vibrating alarm, and more.
It doesn’t come with a touch display and you can’t store your music on it, but it is a no nonsense tracker that will get the job done for your basic fitness tracking needs and it will look good doing it. The battery life on this watch is about standard with other trackers on the market, which is around five days, but the improvement here is that the Steel HR Sport has two battery modes. The workout mode is the five-day charge, but if you put it into power reserve mode it’ll last up to an additional twenty days before needing a recharge.
