MEMPHIS, Tenn. –The University of Memphis women’s golf team opens its 2018-19 season at the Payne Stewart Invitational at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Missouri, Monday. The defending champs at the event, Memphis is taking all seven golfers to the season-opening event, including defending individual medalist Michaela Fletcher
The field will play 36 holes on Monday on the 6,001-yard, par-71 course at Twin Oaks, with an 8:30 am shotgun start. The event will wrap on Tuesday with 18 holes, also off an 8:30 am shotgun start. The 15 teams in this year’s event are Arkansas State, Creighton, Drury, Little Rock, host Missouri State, Murray State, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Oral Roberts, Southern Illinois, UMKC, UTEP, Wichita State and William Woods.
Fletcher is the defending individual medalist at the event. Last year, the Pietermaritzburg, South Africa native was the lone golfer in the field to post a sub-par score (212, -1) for her first collegiate win.
Fellow senior Sydney Colwill is also coming off a top five finish at last year’s event, firing a 219 to finish third.
Memphis had one other top five finisher in last year’s victory at the event, but who fills the shoes of now-graduated Emily Goldenstein, who finished fourth last year, will determine if the Lady Tigers can defend their tournament title. Senior Madison Thomas and junior Abby Herrmann are both good candidates to post top 10 finishes in Goldenstein’s absence.
Thomas had a tough opening round in the event last season, which pushed her to a finish in 39thplace, but she has momentum coming into this week’s event after recording a hole-in-one in qualifying last week.
Herrmann just missed a top 10 finish at the event last year, firing a 224 to tie for 11th. In her second round at last year’s event, Herrmann fired a 70, which was her then-career-best round. She tied and reset her career low round mark three more times after the Payne Stewart Memorial event and finished tied for first at the Magnolia Invitational.
Sophomore Julia Matzat will also be back on the course as well competing as an individual. Matzat competed in three events last year, but now has an entire season of college golf under her belt as the team opens on Monday.
This event will also be the college debuts of Ana Dawson and Victoria Gallegos, the two freshmen on this season’s roster. Gallegos will be part of the team entry in her first collegiate event.

There will be no live scoring from the event, but updates will be available at at the end of each day of play.
