The Ukiah High School girls volleyball program is back on the court and ready to begin their latest season of competition. The 2018 school season has not quite yet begun, but upcoming and returning volleyball players are already seeing some preseason action over the net.

Tryouts for the girls Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity teams were held last week, beginning Monday, Aug. 10, and continued through to week; particularly for those players who had survived the cut. For those to make their team, immediately the season had begun for them.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, the Lady Wildcat Varsity team participated in an early season openeing Jamboree held in Kelseyvile, while the younger-class JV and Freshman teams participated in another Jamboree held in Anderson Valley. More a series of scrimmage-type games, the girls were given a chance to show the Wildcats coaches what they could expect early on from their players.

“We have a big senior class with a lot of talent this year,” determined the Lady Wildcats Head Coach Amanda Brown. “We have six seniors returning, a full team of nine players, and a few girls who have decided to continue as practice players – with the potential of possibly getting a position”.

That’s right, six of the team’s nine players are seniors. This abundance of experienced veteran players means that the 2018 Fall Season Ukiah High Volleyball team will likely be a force to be reckoned with in the North Bay League. But it won’t be only the returning seniors contributing experienced play to this season Varsity team, as Coach Brown explained, “We have our junior setter Victoria Ruiz returning. I’m real excited to have her. We have also have sophomore Josie Waldemar coming up to play on the barrow, which is a defensive specialist position”.

The Lady Wildcats will be hosting a scrimmage this Thursday night, against the Kelseyville High School girls JV and Varsity teams. Though the Jamborees may have given the coaches some insight into their players, scrimmages held in the preseason give the coaches an opportunity to see – after some practices – how the players may come together as a team. This may be less important to a Varsity team mostly familiar with one another, for the JV team it may be instrumental in building the team up for the competitive season. The Junior Varsity team is scheduled to begin the scrimmage at 4 p.m., with the Varsity to follow.

The Varsity team will compete in their first game of the season at the end of the first week of school, on Saturday, Aug. 25, in the Fort Bragg Volleyball Tournament. The JV and Varsity will return to Fort Bragg on Tuesday, Aug. 28, for the next game rounds.

The JV and Varsity teams will play their first home games of the season next month, on Sept. 9, against the visiting Montgomery Lady Vikings team. With the realignment of the league this year, the Monty game will not count as an NBL match. Instead, the Lady Cats first league games will be held, on Sept. 11, against the now-NBL Analy High School Lady Tigers, in an away game.

With many big changes coming to the league season and with an experienced Varsity team ready to meet the competition head on, Coach Brown seemed enthusiastic about her teams’ chances this season. “We have girls that have been playing together for a really long time with some new girls coming up. It’s exciting to watch. They’re really gelling as good team”.
